India wins T20 World Cup for the second time

In a thrilling final of the T20 World Cup, India defeated South Africa by 7 runs to lift the trophy at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. After winning the toss, India decided to bat first and scored 176/7. Casing 177 to win, South Africa could score 168/8, falling short by 7 runs.

  • Virat Kohli gave a stunning performance and scored 76 off 59 balls with two sixes and six fours. Axar Patel scored 47 off 31 balls with four sixes and one four. Shivam Dube added 27 runs off 16 balls with one six and three fours. As a result, the team scored 176 in 20 overs after losing 7 wickets.
  • While chasing this score, South Africa could only score 168 at the loss of 8 wickets. Heinrich Klaasen (52 off 27 balls), Quinton de Kock (39 off 31 balls), Tristan Stubbs (31 off 21 balls), and David Miller (21 off 17 balls) put their efforts well to achieve the target.
  • Hardik Pandya (3/20), Jasprit Bumrah (2/18), and Arshdeep Singh (2/20) with their effective bowling prevented South African batsmen from achieving the target.

  • By winning the final, India received a cash reward of $2.45 million (Rs.20.42 crore), while South Africa, the runner-up, got $1.28 million (Rs.10.67 crore).

    • Suryakumar Yadav was recognised for his stunning catch of Miller with the Smart Catch of the Match.
  • In the Tournament
    • Indian bowling sensation Jasprit Bumrah won the Player of the Tournament for his exceptional bowling performance. He played only eight matches and took 15 wickets at an economy of 4.17. He took home $15,000 (Rs.12,30,000).
    • Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan scored the highest runs (281) in the tournament. Rohit Sharma scored 257 runs in the tournament, becoming the second-highest scorer.
    • India’s Arshdeep Singh and Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi emerged as leading wicket-takers with 17 each.

About T20 World Cup 2024

  • This was the 9th edition of the Men’s T20 World Cup.
  • This is the second time when India emerged victorious and grabbed the trophy. It won the inaugural edition in 2007 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni after defeating Pakistan in the final. And, then in 2024 by beating South Africa.
