India and Egypt conduct the HOPEX exercise

The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Egyptian Air Force (EAF) recently concluded a weeklong exercise HOPEX from 21 to 26 June. This was aimed at promoting bilateral and regional cooperation between the two forces. This was the fourth joint exercise of the forces of these two nations. The IAF contingent had landed in Egypt just after completing the “Red Flag” exercise.

What is HOPEX?

  • HOPEX, or Ex-HOPEX, is a joint exercise of IAF and EAF to strengthen defense cooperation.
  • This year IAF’s Rafale fighters, C-17 Globemaster and IL-78 tankers were deployed for the exercise. Rafale fighter jets are known for their advanced combat capabilities. Rafale jets were also deployed for the multinational “Red Flag 24” exercise in the US. C-17 Globemaster has exceptional airlift capability that facilitates troop movement and logistics. The IL-78 Tankers are equipped with technology to provide mid-air refuelling that enhances the operational capabilities of aircraft.
  • The exercise not only enhanced the operational capabilities of the IAF and the EAF but also improved their interoperability significantly. It also made them aware of each other’s technical capabilities, combat tactics, and best practices.
  • The IAF regularly participate in such exercises with different countries to enhance defense cooperation and relationships.
