Government approves the creation of an all-women battalion within CISF

The Central government has recently given its nod to the proposal to create an all-women battalion within the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The battalion will comprise over 1,000 women personnel from the force.

Key highlights

  • The government has taken this decision to meet the rising demand for the force for various purposes, including VIP security and enhancing security at airports.
  • It will be a reserve battalion, and personnel will be selected from the existing strength of the CISF.
  • The selected cadets will be provided special training to equip them with the requisite skills to handle critical security arrangements successfully.
  • Female CISF personnel are already deployed at various sites, such as metros and historic places, including the Taj Mahal. They are exhibiting exceptional capabilities and successfully executing their responsibilities.

About CISF

  • The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was established in 1969 with the goal of providing protection to industrial establishments. Over the years of operation, the force proved its efficacy by providing impregnable security to industrial and commercial complexes, supporting their daily activities and commercial goals.
  • The force works under the direct supervision of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The total strength of the force today is over two lakh personnel, who are stationed at various places.
  • An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer heads the organisation as Director General and commands its functions and operations.
  • Every year, CISF celebrates its foundation day on 10th March.

Key functions

  • The force provides security to critical infrastructure, including nuclear and space establishments, airports, seaports, and others.
  • It was given complete security at airports across the country following the Kandahar hijack in 2000.
  • It also provides security to VIPs.
  • In addition to its existing responsibilities, the government allowed the force to provide security to private establishments and corporations.
  • Furthermore, it provides fire safety services and consultation to other organisations.

The formation of a specialised women’s battalion will not only help in enhancing security arrangements but also in encouraging more women to join the force. This will allow the government and force to harness the true potential of women’s strength and acumen.
