Noted Indian scholar and author Arundhati Roy won the prestigious Pen Printer Prize 2024. This award is being given to her for her fearless writing that beautifully and truthfully defines our lives and societies. Roy will receive the award on October 10 this year. Roy is currently facing prosecution under the UAPA for her comments on Kashmir made 14 years ago.
About Arundhati Roy
- Born in 1961 in Shillong, Arundhati Roy became famous with her debut novel “The God of Small Things” and won the Booker Prize in 1997.
- She won several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Screenplay for her work for “In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones”.
- She also won the Sydney Peace Prize 2004, the Orwell Award 2004, the Norman Mailer Prize 2011, and the Sahitya Akademi Award 2006.
- Her notable works include “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness”, “The Algebra of Infinite Justice”, and “Listening to Grasshoppers: Field Notes on Democracy”, among others.
- Roy is known for telling stories of injustice with her unique style of wit and beauty. She expresses her opinion not only on Indian subjects but also on international issues.
What is the Pen Printer Prize?
- It is an annual award set up by English PEN in 2009. This was set up in memory of Nobel Laureate playwright Harold Printer.
- It is given to a writer for their outstanding contributions to the world of literature.
- Famous novelist Salman Rushdie also won this award in 2014.
