India celebrates the 299th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar

On May 31, the nation celebrated the 299th birth anniversary of the queen of the Malwa region Ahilyabai Holkar. She is known for offering good governance to her kingdom.

About Ahilyabai Holkar

  • She was born on May 31, 1725, in Chondi, Indore State, which is presently situated in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district. Her father Mankoji Shinde was a scion of the respected Dhangar family.
  • She was married to Khande Rao Holkar (1733) who was the son of Malhar Rao Holkar, a commander in the Maratha army. Her husband died in 1754.
  • Under the guidance of Malhar Rao Holkar, Ahilyabai learnt the basics of ruling a kingdom. After the death of Malhar Rao, Ahilyabai’s only son Male Rao Holkar became the ruler in 1766. However, he too died soon in 1767.
  • Finally, Ahilyabai took control of the kingdom and became queen. She ruled for around 30 years between 1767 to 1795, until her death.
  • She is known for her exemplary administrative abilities. She led armies against intruders and successfully defended Malwa.
  • Maheshwar was made the capital of Malwa under her rule. She also established Maheshwar as the seat of her dynasty.
  • Ahilyabai rejuvenated the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi in 1780.
  • She also rebuilt the present-day structure of Vishnupad Temple, Gaya, in 1787.
  • During her rule, she continuously promoted girl’s education at a time when it was completely forbidden. She worked tirelessly for women’s empowerment and ensured their progress.
  • She also promoted Maheshwari saree production while encouraging trade.
  • She died on 13 August 1795 at the age of 70.
  • The Government of India issued a commemorative stamp in her honour in 1996.
