The Late Chaman Arora has been awarded the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 in Dogri for his book “Ik Hor Ashwthama”, a collection of short stories. A three-member jury unanimously selected the book for the award. At a special function on March 8, 2025, a family member of the author will be presented with a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque for ₹1 lakh.
About the Sahitya Akademi Award
- Established in 1954, the Sahitya Akademi Award is an honour conferred to authors who contributed outstandingly to a particular language.
- It is awarded annually to authors from 24 languages it recognises. It includes 22 languages mentioned in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. It has also recognised English and Rajasthani.
- The award is given for original work and translation from and into the languages it recognises.
- It is the second most prestigious literary award after the Jnanpith Award.
- It comes under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
- A plaque, a shawl, and a cheque of ₹1 lakh are offered to an awardee.
