About the T20 World Cup 2024
- This is the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies. It will be played between 1-29 June, with the semi-finals scheduled for June 26 and 27, and the final will be played on June 29.
- The format consists of group matches, Super 8, semi-finals, and final.
- 20 nations are participating in the tournament, divided into 4 groups. India is in Group A with Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and the USA.
- A total of 55 matches will be played across six grounds in the West Indies and three grounds in the USA.
- India will play its first match on June 5 against Ireland. Rohit Sharma is leading the Indian team as captain and Hardik Pandya will be supporting him as the vice-captain of the team.
About T20 World Cup
- The T20 format of the World Cup began with its inaugural edition in 2007, when India won under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni by defeating Pakistan in the final.
- Since then, a total of eight editions have been played.
- This is a biennial event, held once every two years.
- In 2020, the tournament was cancelled due to the pandemic and lockdowns.
- Only the West Indies (2012 and 2016) and England (2010 and 2022) have clinched the trophy twice. Pakistan won the title in 2009 by defeating Sri Lanka in the final. Sri Lanka won the title in 2014 by defeating India in the final. Australia won the World Cup in 2021 by defeating New Zealand.
- India hosted the T20 World Cup in 2016.
- Canada, Uganda and the USA are playing their first T20 World Cup in the 2024 edition.
- The tournament was organized in subsequent years twice, in 2009 and 2010 and in 2021 and 2022.
