About the Election Commission of India (ECI)

  • It is a constitutional body responsible for conducting elections in India, including those of the President of India, Vice-President of India, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assembly, and State Legislative Council.
  • However, it is not responsible for conducting Panchayat and Municipal elections. These elections are conducted by the respective State Election Commissions.
  • Articles 324 to 329 of the Indian Constitution deal with the provisions related to the ECI, including appointments, service conditions, powers, and other aspects.
  • Originally, the ECI was a one-member body. However, the Election Commissioner Amendment Act of 1989 created seats for two more members, making it a multi-member body.
  • The President of India appoints all the members of the Election Commission. The members of the ECI serve for a tenure of six years, or up to the age of 65, whichever is earlier.
  • The process of removal of the Chief Election Commissioner from the office is similar to that of a Supreme Court judge.
