The second India-Mozambique-Tanzania trilateral exercise concludes

India-Mozambique-Tanzania (IMT) recently came together for their trilateral exercise, IMT Trilat-2024, which concluded in Nacala, Mozambique. This week-long exercise took place between March 21 and March 28 and was aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation, understanding maritime capabilities, and achieving shared goals. This exercise is expected to enhance the interoperability of the navies of these three nations.

The concluding ceremony was held on Indian naval ships INS Tir and INS Sujata, which witnessed participation from top officials of navies from these nations. The nations showcased their commitment to continue the exercise and enhance collaboration in the field. This will bolster maritime security as well as regional stability.

Key highlights

  • The IMT Trilat was divided into two phases- the harbour phase and the sea phase.
  • The harbour phase included intensive training sessions on INS Tir and INS Sujata.
  • Moreover, it also comprised training on Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS), Damage Control exercises, Firefighting Training, communication procedures, and medical lectures.
  • In the sea phase as well, Indian naval ships played a major role, when they boarded sea riders from the other two navies. The riders took part in bridge watchkeeping, damage control, and firefighting.
  • Mozambique’s naval ship Namatili and Tanzania’s naval ship Fatundu participated in the exercise.
  • This phase involved VBSS exercises and night manoeuvres.
  • Moreover, the IMT Trilat 2024 also arranged training sessions for officials, cross-deck visits, Yoga sessions, and sports activities.
  • The ships that took part in the exercise were open to visitors. As a result, more than 1,500 people visited the ships.
