Mohan Charan Majhi sworn in as Odisha’s new CM

Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Mohan Charan Majhi has taken oath as Odisha’s new Chief Minister. With his appointment, the 24-year-long tenure of Naveen Patnaik has ended.

Key highlights

  • The BJP won a sufficient number of seats in the recently held assembly elections and emerged as the single largest party in the state. The BJP won 78 seats; the Biju Janta Dal grabbed 51; the INC won 14 seats; the CPI(M) won one seat; and independent candidates grabbed three seats. The total number of assembly seats in the state is 147.
  • Majhi becomes the first CM from the BJP in the state.
  • Along with Majhi, two BJP leaders took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers. Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida became the Dy CM.

About Mohan Charan Majhi

  • 52-year-old Majhi has become the 15th Chief Minister of Odisha.
  • In the recently held elections, he won the Keonjhar seat with a huge margin, defeating BJD’s Mina Majhi.
  • Majhi started his political career as a Sarpanch in 1997. In 2000, he was elected as an MLA for the first time from the Keonjhar seat. Since then, he is continuously serving as an MLA.

  • The state is a land of many tribes, including Juang, Kol, Holva, Bhunjia, Parenga, Sabar, Paroja, Bhumia, and Khond.
