Spain becomes the 99th member of the International Solar Alliance

Spain has recently joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and became its 99th member state. This is a notable leap of the global community towards combating climate change with the increased emphasis on harnessing solar energy potential for rising energy needs. Earlier, Panama officially joined the ISA as the 98th member state.

Key highlights

  • The Instrument of Ratification in this regard was handed over by the ambassador of Spain to the External Affairs Ministry and Head of the Depository in New Delhi.
  • With this membership, Spain showcased its keenness to contribute to the global effort to enhance solar energy deployment, ensure energy security, and drive energy transition in member countries.

About International Solar Alliance (ISA)

  • It was conceptualized on the sidelines of the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Paris in 2015 and is a joint effort of India and France.
  • It is a collaborative platform for increased deployment of solar energy technologies as a means of bringing energy access to its member countries, ensuring energy security and driving the energy transition.
  • Its secretariat is located at Gurugram, Haryana.
  • The agency’s 6th Session was held in New Delhi in November 2023.
  • It is headed by the Director General who leads the functions of the agency. The tenure of the Director General is four years and they can be re-appointed.
  • Initiatives of the ISA-
    • It actively supports solar projects in various countries. Apart from funding projects, it has also established training centers across Africa to develop local capacity and provide expertise and support to member countries.
    • Towards 1000: It is a strategy of the ISA to mobilize USD1000 billion in investments in solar energy solutions by 2030. It also aims to ensure energy access to 1000 million people using clean energy solutions and achieve the installation of 1000 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy capacity.
  • The agency aims to make solar energy the primary source of energy for its members.
