Indian-origin scientist and astronomy expert, Shrinivas R. Kulkarni has won the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy for 2024, awarded by the Shaw Prize Foundation. This award is a recognition of Srinivas’ path-breaking inventions and discoveries in the realm of astronomy.
About Shrinivas R. Kulkarni
- He is a professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
- He has been given the award for his ground-breaking work on millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical objects, which enhanced our understanding of the time-variable optical sky.
- He holds an M.S. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) and a Ph.D. from the University of California.
About the Shaw Prize
- It was established by the late Run Run Shaw, a Hong Kong-based philanthropist.
- It is given in three fields, Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences, each carrying a monetary award of $1.2 million.
- Alongside Kulkarni, the Shaw Prize 2024 recipients include Swee Lay Thein and Stuart Orkin in Life Science and Medicine, and Peter Sarnak in Mathematical Sciences. The winners will receive the prize in November this year at a ceremony in Hong Kong.
- It will be the 21st edition of the prize distribution ceremony.
