What is a GI indication tag?

  • A GI tag is a name or sign that is given to a product having a specific geographical origin or location and special characteristics from that origin.
  • The GI tag process is administered by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, which comes under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • The GI tag remains valid for 10 years. During this period, only authorized users or people from those specific geographies are allowed to use the name and sign given to the product.
  • The tag provides protection to the products from being copied by others.
  • Till today, around 635 products have been awarded the GI tag.
  • Darjeeling tea was the first product that received a GI tag.
